"Do not worry about your originality. You could not get rid of it even if you wanted to"
~
Robert Henri

From the President

It was a rainy afternoon, but last Sunday the Superchief Trio brought the sunshine inside. For two hours the group - Pam on the trombone, Keith at the keyboard and John on drums - sang and played their hearts out for a small, but wonderfully enthusiastic and appreciative audience inside St. Paul's church to inaugurate our performing arts series. As Linda Remington, senior warden of the church (and Arts Guild board member) said, "This church hasn't heard music quite like this before." Here's a photo of Pam, John, and Keith having fun.
SuperchiefPamJohnKeith
Gallery sitter Jon Small remarked that at intermission, when the audience came in for refreshments and to view the last day of the Abstractions II show, it was like a cruise ship coming in - a sudden influx of crowds all at once, then 15 minutes later zoooom - gone.
Next in the series, on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 3pm, is storyteller Katie Latimer relating Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-tale Heart." Tickets are just $10 and Katie warns us not to bring young children; it might be a tad scary for them. Tape the Patriots and come hear Katie Latimer live.
In November, thanks to the work done over the past year by the Portsmouth Town Arts and Culture Committee (chaired by yours truly), every household in Portsmouth will receive a mailed survey. The survey is intended to assess the level of support and interest in establishing a permanent center for the arts in town to serve the region-a center that offers good space for all kinds of art classes, exhibitions, musical and theatrical performances, lectures and demonstrations, space for other non-profits to rent ... a true arts center, with the Portsmouth Arts Guild at its heart.
The Portsmouth Town Council is interested in an honest assessment on whether such an arts center would be viable and good for the Town. To find out, the Arts Guild applied for and received funding from the Rhode Island Foundation and the RI State Council on the Arts to hire an outside arts consultant to conduct a series of focus groups and the survey, Craig Dreeszen & Associates of Florence, MA. If you live in Portsmouth, watch your mailbox in mid-November. There are exciting things happening in the arts in Portsmouth, and your Arts Guild is making them happen. Stay involved, and let me know if you have questions.
Congratulations and kudos to all members who had work accepted in the Members' Juried Show, and especially to the following prize winners: 1st Prize, Joan DeRugeris for her acrylic, "The Conversation"; 2nd Prize, Wanda Perkowska Coderre for her watercolor, "Last Light of Day"; 3rd Prize, Karen Nash for her styrofoam sculpture, "Monte Alban: Transfer of Power"; and Honorable Mention winners Anne Winthrop Cordin for her oil, "Dawn"; Tina Thuel for her photograph, "Return to Freedom"; Bonnie Jaffe for her photograph, "Memories of Marilyn"; and Lenny Rumpler for his photograph, "Untitled #3."
Finally, artist Valorie Sheehan, who currently has an exhibit of her remarkable sculptures at the DeBlois Gallery, will speak about her artwork involving children from an orphanage in Kenya at our October 20 members' meeting. Come at 6:30 to meet your fellow Arts Guild members. Meeting starts promptly at 7.

See you at the gallery!

Sales Tax Info for Artists

From Mary Ann Martin:

It is not too early to start thinking about the December Holiday Table Sale at the Gallery.
If you think you may be participating, you will need your own Retail Sales Permit issued by the State of Rhode Island/Division of Taxation. The permit costs $10 for one year. You may apply at www.ri.gov/taxation/ (401-574-8732 or 401-574-8901).
Once you have your permit, you will be required to submit a very simple form quarterly along with the sales tax you have collected on your sales during that quarter. These would be sales you make privately or at arts/crafts shows. Galleries and shops are responsible for collecting and submitting sales tax (if required) on any sales they make on your behalf.
