From the President
December
brings to a close another busy year for The Portsmouth Arts Guild, our
seventh overall and our third at St. Paul's. On behalf of our
board and managing committee, I hope it's been artistically rewarding
for you. This is your arts guild, and our goal is to make it
responsive to your needs while providing exciting and creative art opportunities
of all kinds for Portsmouth and the region. Our performing
arts series is beginning to gain some traction; some 60 people attended
the marvelous performance of The Bohemian Quartet last month. The final
performance for 2009 presents Sparky's Puppets on Sunday, Dec. 20,
3 pm. It's especially great for children and only $5 to attend. So
bring your kids and grandkids for a fun introduction to the holiday
season. Given 2009's
miserable economy and our challenging location for shoppers, I think
the Arts Guild had a very respectable year; we had more than 35 sales
totaling nearly $3,000, and we still have a month to go. According to
a new, national survey of artists reported in the New York Times
(11/24/09), more than half experienced an income drop from 2008 to 2009
with writers and visual artists suffering more than musicians and architects.
Eighteen percent said their income dropped 50% or more over the previous
year-clearly a tough year for artists nationwide. In that context,
I should mention that Randy Rosenbaum, executive director of the
Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, provided an inspiring discussion
at last month's members' meeting on the many grant opportuntities
for individual artists and art organizations in Rhode Island. He noted
that they were able to fund about half of all their grant requests,
which to my mind is pretty good odds if you're working on a project
that needs funding. To learn about these opportunities, visit the RISCA
website at www.arts.ri.gov. The next application deadline is
April 1. Speaking
of members' meetings, the December 15th meeting will be
our traditional holiday celebration, but you will also have the
opportunity for some hands-on fun in creating Artist Trading Cards,
led by Felicia Touhey and Kathy Parker. For a preview of what this is
all about, go to www.artist-trading-cards.ch, but be sure to attend the December
meeting no matter what kind of art you create.

 In last month's
newsletter I mentioned that you would be receiving a survey in November
(if you were a Portsmouth resident) concerning resident support for
creating a new community arts center in town for the region. For reasons
beyond our control, that survey has been delayed and is now scheduled
for mailing in January. I hope you
had a good Thanksgiving and have much to be thankful for. Thank you
for being a Portsmouth Arts Guild member. Don't forget our Gala Holiday
Sale on Saturday, Dec. 5, 10 am to 4 pm-10 tables of interesting arts,
crafts and artistic gifts for those you love.
See you at the gallery!
