Then the rain came down to soak us,
And now before the mind can focus -
Crocus."

From the President

I mentioned last month that this was the Year of the Artist. Well, true as that is, it must also be the Year of the Volunteer, as that's what we need to keep our gallery open. As you know, this is an all-volunteer arts association that depends on its membership for everything that it offers and does, including staffing the gallery 16 hours a week, 10 months a  year.    At this writing we have no volunteer gallery staff for 6 afternoons in March and April, and 13 in June and July. (May is fine!) Please help if you can. Call me at 683-4319 or email eric.broudy@verizon.net to sign up for one or more of those afternoons to keep the gallery open.
The Guild is working on raising funds to hire a part-time gallery manager to assume this and other administrative duties, but that won't happen until later this year, or perhaps early 2011. In the meantime, it's up to Guild members who exhibit their work here and attend member meetings here to keep the gallery up and running. Our success is in your hands. Become a gallery volunteer and help keep the Arts Guild open for business ... for yourself, your fellow artists, and for the community.
Intake for the March Annual Members' All-Media Exhibition is March 8 (3-6 pm) and March 9 (6:30-8:30 pm). Don't miss this opportunity to show three of your winter creations, just $10 for one, $5 for each additional. The opening reception is Sunday, March 14, 2-4, along with the staged reading of O'Henry's "The Last Leaf" by Portsmouth Community Theater actors in the church at 2 pm. The performance is 20 minutes and free to all. If you haven't yet rejoined for 2010 (tsk tsk) you can do so at intake.
The marvelous Providence String Quartet, the quartet in residence at Community MusicWorks, will be performing in the church on Sunday, March 21 at 3pm. Tickets are $15 ($10 for seniors, students and vets) and available at the gallery, by phone to JP Fernandes at 253-6682, or at the door if any remain. Come to hear great classical music and support the performing arts at your arts guild. Refreshments, as always,  in the gallery during intermission.
Some spring art classes are still open for students; check the website for details. Finally, our March 16 members' meeting will offer a presentation by Dorothy Bocian, president of Sandywoods Farm, a new 174-acre residential community under construction in Tiverton, intentionally designed to link art, artists and their workspaces with agriculture, community and conservation.
It's March and we're back in full operation for 2010-that is, if you can help to keep the gallery open. Contact me to sign up: eric.broudy@verizon.net.
Thanks, and ...

See you at the gallery!

~Eric Broudy

Artist Opportunities

Cereal Night on Aquidneck Island. Churches on Aquidneck Island were invited, by St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Newport, to participate in an ecumenical fundraiser that involves gathering to eat cereal instead of a regular meal - and then donating the saving to local charities. Our congregation in Portsmouth is participating by having an early supper on Wednesdays, in the PAG gallery, during Lent from 5:15 to 6:30. We would welcome any Guild Members to join us for these culinary events. We'll supply the bowls and milk, etc. Everyone brings their favorite cold cereal.

Bristol Art Museum Winter Art Talks. The musuem's next Art Talk will be held on Thursday, March 4th at 7pm at the Rogers Free Library at 550 Hope Street, Bristol and features a local Warren artist, Allison Newsome, a ceramic sculptor. For more information, www.bristolartmuseum.org

Spring Soiree. Please join the artists for their first open studios: Donna Bruton, Judith Chaves, Libby Manchester Gilpatric, Nanette Dunn, Kendra Bidwell Ferreira, Jacki Shriber-Lane, Lianna Slater, Anne Winthrop Cordin, and Carole Zaloumis. Saturday, March 20, 2010, 4-8p.m at Beach Studios & Beach Studios North, 146 Aquidneck Avenue, Middletown, RI 02842. More info: (401) 682-1915

Tiverton Four Corners. The Arts Center and Merchants Association are planning several events open to the public during 2010 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of this historic village.
In 1710, under English rule and still a part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, The Four Corners area was measured and bounded by an 80 acre mill lot. The mill and village were called "Nomscott" for the pond now called "Nonquit." Thirty building lots were measured and the nucleus of the village of Tiverton Four Corners was formed.
One of the first events will be the 25th Preservation Conference of the Rhode Island Historical and Heritage Commission. This conference will be held in Tiverton and  Little Compton and will showcase local preservation projects from around the state as well as tours of the Sakonnet Peninsula.
Community members will collaborate on local issues including protecting rural landscapes, finding historic places, and increasing heritage tourism. There will be opportunities to visit historic forts and farms, villages and summer resorts, cemeteries and conservation land in Little Compton and Tiverton.
Date for the conference is April 24. More info: www.preservation.ri.gov/conference
