"Oh, Spring! I want to go out and feel you and get inspiration. My old things seem dead. I want fresh contacts, more vital searching."
~
Emily Carr

From the President

The Arts Guild's first effort at a Members' Invitational Juried show was a success with 26 entries on CD. The three jurors selected the following five to exhibit their work in this special exhibition in August: Anne Winthrop Cordin (oils), Priscilla Foley (watercolor and mixed media), Marc Jaffe (photography), P. Jane Renwick (acrylics), and Lenny Rumpler (photography). Congratulations to the winners and many thanks to all the participants for entering. The Annual March Members' All-Media Exhibition-96 works by 49 members-has also shown signs of success with three sales as of this writing by Jonathan Small, Monty Gomez, and Suzanne Lewis. The opening also featured the Guild's first collaboration with the Portsmouth Community Theater with their 20-minute dramatic presentation of O. Henry's "The Last Leaf."
The People's Choice First Prize Award for the Members' Exhibition goes to Jonathan Small for his painting, "Row Boat Row." A 4-way tie for Second Prize was shared by Alan Berry, JP Fernandes, Bonnie Jaffe, and Priscilla Malone. See the notice elsewhere in this issue for details on their winning works. Congratulations to all for their superb entries.
Intake for "Imagine Red," juried by Helen Nadler, is April 5 and 6, which is also the time for our Resident Artists (those who have rented panels for this session) to hang their work. The opening reception is Friday, April 9, 6-8pm.
Interest in the arts appears to be live and well in Portsmouth. In a recent town-wide survey commissioned by the Arts Guild regarding the feasibility of building a new community center for the visual and performing arts, "Half of respondents thought it a good idea to build an arts center, a third disagreed, and the balance were not sure. Over half  believe that residents' cultural and educational needs are not being adequately met by other organizations on Aquidneck Island and Portsmouth needs a community arts center."
The study, mailed to 7,305 Portsmouth households in January, had a 13% return with a 3% margin of error. It was funded by the Rhode Island Foundation, BankNewport, The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, and The Portsmouth Arts Guild. The survey was conducted by Dreeszen & Assoc. of Florence, Mass. Some of specific survey findings included these items:
         · 83% attended cultural programs  and institutions      locally and elsewhere;
         · 41% had created visual art or craft work in the past year;
         · 75% were likely to attend programs at a community center for the arts;
         · Over 75% agreed that a community arts center would enhance the Town's quality of life;
         · 58% agreed that an arts center would help attract residents and businesses;
         * 57% agreed that a center for the arts would contribute to the Town's economy.
When it came to funding such an arts center, however, the responses were more divided. Some 60% "believe the town cannot afford community-building initiatives like an arts center when faced with other pressing needs. While a third of respondents supported the idea of a bond-supported community center, about half disagreed, and others were unsure." Many needed more information before deciding; others thought the current economy was not favorable for such a project. Nonetheless, interest in attending and participating in the arts was strong, with particular interest in outdoor summer concerts, theater, adult art classes, arts exhibitions and films. Lectures and music also generated significant interest.
And speaking of lectures, at our next members'  meeting, April 20 at 7pm, artist Susan Fossati, will speak about the development and focus of her paintings over the past 30 years. Susan works in oil, pastel and watercolors. During her talk and visual presentation, she will discuss her process, techniques and motivations. Don't miss it.

See you at the gallery!

We had a strong field of 26 artists entering. The 3 jurors, Richard Benjamin, Dora Atwater Millikin, and Julie Smith, did a tremendous job of rating everyone as fairly as they could and they provided feedback for every artist's entry.  In spite of some technical difficulties, we were able to see to it that every disc entered was reviewed by the jurors.  The exhibition will run from August 19 to September 19.

Greater Fall River Art Association. "WPA Exhibit". The GFRAA is proud to announce a showing of some of its rare WPA paintings, and the gallery will be open Noon-3pm on Easter Sunday, April 4.This collection represents work by regional artists produced in the mid 1930's as part of the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, a federal program to create work for artists during the Great Depression. Murals, canvases and sculptures were made to decorate post offices, schools and other public buildings, executed for little money but with great pride. Many of these works have been destroyed or stolen over the years and GFRAA considers it an honor to be custodian of part of this national treasure. This is an opportunity to view not only great art, but a piece of our country's history. More info: 508-673-7212
