"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." ~Pablo Picasso

From the President
I recently
attended a Photo Guild lecture at the Newport Art Museum by photographer
Ron Rosenstock, who has been peering from behind a camera since he was
a mere tadpole in the 1950s. As part of his lecture, he distributed
a sheet of his favorite quotations. Here are a couple that resonated
with me:
By Ralph
Waldo Emerson, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny
matters compared to what lies within us." Or by Pablo Picasso, "Art
washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." And from
Albert Einstein probably my favorite for my current endeavors, "In
the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." Good things to keep in
mind and ponder as we wrestle with our artistic (and other) demons. "Imagine
Red" was a terrific success with 153 entries that produced an exhibition
of 80 wonderful works. With the equally great response to last year's
"Imagine Yellow" show, the exhibition committee believes it should
continue the color theme next year as well. If you have a color you'd
like to see featured next year, or have other ideas for next year's
shows, email them to Exhibition Chair Jonathan Small at jonsmall@cox.net. He wants to hear from you. And don't
forget, if you're in danger of succumbing to the lethargy of spring
fever and not entering "Beyond the Lens" or "I Got Rhythm,"
all our juried shows offer cash prizes! The Summer
2010 classes and workshops brochure is now printed and available at
the gallery. Shortly, it will also be posted on our website. Take a
look and mark your calendar for a summer class or two to continue your
artistic growth and development. Painter and
teacher Susan Fossati gave an outstanding presentation of her work and
development as an artist at our April 20 Members' Meeting. If you
want to meet an artist who paints from the depths of her soul, who tells
stories with her oils that perhaps only she can fathom, whose working
artistic ethic is to "be true to yourself," then introduce yourself
to Susan. Her vision is unique. At our May
18 Members' Meeting, Bob LeCompte, Jr., who has been designing, selling
and building custom framing at Riverside Art in Somerset since 1975,
will demonstrate and discuss how best to frame your artwork. If you
have a framing question about one of your works, bring it to the meeting
and your questions will be answered. Also, remember
that the opening for "Beyond the Lens" is Friday, May 7, 6-8 pm.
Whether you're a photographer or not, be sure to attend to see what's
happening in this fast-changing field as photography continues to redefine
itself.
Thanks, and...
See you in the gallery!

Jillian Barber. Jillian was among the finalists in Newport Art Museum's "Virtual Portrait Gallery" contest. Juror John Kotula had this to say about her photograph "Doppleganger", at right: "Usually,
when people photograph children they are going for sweetness and
innocence, but childhood is so much richer and more complicated than
that. This beautiful photo suggests that a child's life is just as
multifaceted as an adult's."
