From the President
Like flowers, plants and the human spirit, the arts blossom
and flourish in the summer. It seems everywhere you turn there's an arts
festival, a plein aire session, a group arts excursion, or another gallery
night beckoning. Seasonal Affective Disorder, so useful for nurturing the angst
of young, budding novelists, is well behind us now. Even the Portsmouth Arts
Guild has its own outdoor opportunity for members with the Art al Fresco,
art-on-the-fence, show in collaboration with the Bristol Art Museum, July 25 in
front of Linden Place in Bristol. If you want to participate, contact Sheila
Clark Lundy at 749-5503, sclark3935@cox.net,
ASAP. But in your zeal to enjoy the good weather, don't forget the
"inside" arts, such as the current "I Got Rhythm" show at the Portsmouth Arts
Guild, or the special invitational show by the Artists' Cooperative Gallery of
Westerly that opens Friday, July 16, 6-8 pm. And there are still openings in
some of our summer art classes, such as Digital Photography Workshop with Cindy
Horovitz Wilson and Eileen McCarney Muldoon, or Plein Air Painting with
Kathleen Weber, Solar Plate Printmaking with Suzanne Lewis, and Making Ancient
and Medieval Mediums with Jay Egge. Check our website or gallery brochure for
details. It's hard to believe, but the fall classes brochure is
already in the works with seven(!) new classes not offered before, including
ceramics, pastels, and portrait drawing, among others. Stay tuned for this
upcoming brochure and web listing. As you may know, we don't have an August members' meeting
and program, but the July 20 members' meeting will be a fascinating discussion
by art historian and RISD teacher Barbara Olins Alpert on "The Artist's Mind:
From the Ice Age to Now." You'll soon receive a separate email with more
details on this special program. Well, as predicted, I omitted one person (that I know of)
from last month's roster of Arts Guild valued volunteers-Judith Miller, who
serves on our Exhibition Committee. My sincere apologies, Judith. Without our
member volunteers there would be no Arts Guild. If you haven't served on one of
our committees or spent a few hours keeping the gallery open, you're missing
part of what makes the Portsmouth Arts Guild exciting and rewarding. Send me an
email and let's discuss what you can do, and what you will gain, by becoming an
Arts Guild volunteer.
Happy summer, and...
See you in the gallery!

Members' Meeting Tuesday, July 20, 6:30 pm
Program: Barbara Olins Alpert The Artist's Mind: From the Ice Age to Now Barbara Olins Alpert will speak about her recently published
book, The Creative Ice Age Brain. Alpert approaches the haunting mystery that
surrounds the magnificent Ice Age art, found mainly in the caves of Western Europe, in a new way with information from
psychology and neuroscience. She shows how techniques and concepts used
by these first art makers form part of a universal visual language. Her
book demonstrates that art is a continuum linking the earliest art throughout
art history up to the present.
